Frequently
asked questions
Q. Can ethics really be taught to adults?
A. Yes, it definitely can be. After just a few hours of ethics
training my students typically report that they see, now, a lot
more situations that have something to do with ethics. They see
things now that they never did see before. The first step in teaching
ethics is being aware of the terrain.
Q. I took a business ethics course before. Why should I take
another one?
A. First, I think you will find this course different than
the others you have taken. Secondly, refreshers are always good.
But more importantly, I think that not only will you look at ethics
differently, but also you will have a much better way to talk about
ethics with your colleagues. This ethics will make a difference.
Q. I have taken sexual harassment training seminars. Will you
be covering this topic?
A. No, not directly. This is not another sexual harassment
workshop. Although topics like sexual harassment are important,
this training is more fundamental, more structural in nature. Topics
like this will come up but as a by-product of a deeper dialog.
Q. Why do you use popular movies in your training?
A. I have found that using multimedia materials, e.g., movies,
songs, poetry, helps to remember the point of a certain topic. Adults
learn in many different ways and the more you engage sight and sound
the better the opportunity to make the learning took root.
Q. Are we going to be learning about old, dead philosophers,
like Aristotle or J. S. Mill?
A. Well, I am afraid so! Why not take advantage of the best
history, ethics and philosophy has to offer. My job is to make sure
that these concepts apply to the business world and to constantly
create example that relate to the world of today. I think you actually
might, for once, come to like learning what the great minds of history
have to say. . .about business.
